Your Boundaries - Get Tough!

Updated: Sep 22

Enough is enough! How tough are you with your boundaries?

Maintaining personal boundaries can be challenging, especially if you are used to putting others' needs before your own. However, it is an essential skill to master in order to achieve a well-balanced state of mind and healthy overall well-being. Take some time to go think about and action the following steps to strengthen your boundary management:

Identify your boundaries: Start by identifying your boundaries. Reflect on what is important to you, what you are willing and not willing to tolerate, and what behaviours or actions are off-limits. Write down your boundaries and refer to them as needed.

Communicate your boundaries: Once you have identified your boundaries, it is important to communicate them to others. Be clear and assertive in communicating your boundaries, and let others know how you expect to be treated.

Practice self-awareness: Pay attention to your feelings and needs. Learn to recognise when someone is violating your boundaries and how it makes you feel. The more aware you are of your boundaries and reactions, the easier it will be to maintain them.

Learn to say "no": Many people experience this step as the most challenging in the boundary establishment process. However, saying "no" is an important part of setting and maintaining personal boundaries. Practice saying "no" to requests or activities that do not align with your priorities or values. The first few times can be uncomfortable, however, the more you do it the more at ease you will become with it. Be Brave!

Audit your relationships: As much as possible, surround yourself with people who respect your boundaries and are supportive of your personal growth. This can include friends, family members, a coach, or a therapist who can help you practice boundary-setting and provide encouragement and guidance.

Remember that setting and maintaining personal boundaries is a habit that needs to be embedded. It will take time, patience, and tenacity. Don't give up just because you don't succeed the first few times!
